We all know the end - Mary Stuart will be beheaded

Mary - Queen of Scots, from the series Reign

We all know how it ends. Mary, Queen of Scots, will inevitably be decapitated. It is no point trying to negotiate it. No meaning in hoping for another outcome.

Elizabeth I, from the movie The Golden Age
A few years back I watched the two movies about Elizabeth I. I watched them quite many times and found them being such a comfort. During Christmas I binge watched the Crown. Same royal court, but 400 years later. In many ways the same conventions, the same issues and the same battles, even though democratic values had progressed in society. I continued with a series about Mary, Queen of Scots. She married the French king and tried to rule Scotland from France until he died, when she went back to fight for her country against her cousin, Elizabeth I. And we are back to bows and arrows, poisoning and the battles between catholics and protestants.

I realise that I am thrilled by these Queens. Intrigued. And watching them taking on their role with such a commitment leads me to believe that being a queen is a lonely profession. Or lifestyle. People will interfere, obstruct and most will have an opinion. But at the end of the day the Queen stands alone with the decisions and responsibility.

Elizabeth II, from the series The Crown
When I, at times, feel a little lonely, it is a great comfort thinking of them. The Queens. Their endless fight for what they believe and believed in. Even though I know that Mary will be beheaded at the very end, she doesn't know it. And she lives, rules and reigns as if she would live forever. We all know how it ends. And that takes the uncertainty away, yet gives some seriousness to the situation. Being a Queen wasn't an easy life and it probably isn't. Compared to that, the battles of everyday life seem endlessly easier.
