KintsuFail: When you can't repair with gold

When I do things that I view as extraordinary or have accomplished something I have strived for, I sometimes buy myself a small gift. It is usually something that costs a little too much in relation to what it is. Like this small star-shaped plate, which I adore, perfect for olives. Two weeks ago I moved it from the sink, just to not break it by accident while making breakfast. However, a few seconds later I accidentally managed to remove the handle from the espresso machine with my elbow, and it fell down on the plate, which of course broke. I actually cried. And felt very ashamed for crying over a broken plate. It was beyond repair. And I thought to myself that this kintsukuroi-thing is just something that sounds good. Who would ever repair broken pottery with gold nowadays? So, I threw the pieces away and cried a little more. And I have to confess that I have lost a little faith when it comes to improvement and reparations. Isn't it easier to buy things? A new plate. A new career. An unbroken heart.
